I was disappointed to read The Post's article on BET ["Channel Changer," Style & Arts, May 4]. Like all networks, BET has its detractors. But Teresa Wiltz's story failed to balance the criticism with the reality of our efforts to diversify the network's programming and present a wide variety of images of African Americans over the past 28 years.

ABC, Fox, CBS and NBC posted a 14% decline in 18-to-49-year old viewers during the writers' strike, and those viewers are still down 13% since shows came back in April. Meanwhile, advertising-supported cable increased its share to 47%, from 43%, according to Turner Research.

A doctor for teens - there's, like, a lot to talk about

The teen population is climbing in California, and there are 40 million teenagers nationwide. Yet adolescent medicine remains pediatrics' unnoticed older brother. Few doctors specialize in the age group; there are 40 pediatricians to every one teen doc. Many teens bring their adolescent bodies to the same doctor who gave them shots and lollipops. But teens have a unique set of health concerns, comprising puberty and everything that comes with it. One quarter of high school seniors reported binge drinking in 2006. A recent federal study found that 26 percent of girls aged 14 to 19 had at least one sexually transmitted disease.

Study: Trend-setting Hip-Hoppers aging, but are brand-loyal as ever
