'Boondocks' creator Aaron McGruder to BET: %@*$% ^ & !

The battle between "The Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder and Black Entertainment Television is about to get a lot more animated. Two second-season episodes of the biting cartoon series that attack the black-themed network but were never aired -- possibly because of corporate pressure -- are slated for DVD release Tuesday. The pair of shows take aim at BET's top executives and lampoon what it views as the cable network's harmful negative imagery and stereotypes that work as a "destructive" force within African American culture.

Ad Age reports that CBS this week will unveil a next-generation video player on its site, built on technology CBS bought through Last.fm. The story quotes CBS's interactive TV chief Quincy Smith saying, "You need a core tech team in-house that builds this stuff." Which certainly makes it sound like CBS isn't so keen on relying on partner Joost.

CBS plans to upgrade the video player found on CBS.com and the CBS Audience Network, adding additional viewing options and functionality. Among the new features will be the ability to embed clips on outside Web sites, true HD picture quality and full-screen viewing.

Amas de Casa Desesperadas will air on TV Azteca's Channel 13 during a prime-time slot from Monday to Friday, beginning June 9.

Univision: Prepare To Deal

Distributors can expect a letter from Univision Communications this week declaring its intent to negotiate retransmission-consent deals for its TV stations. How much compensation the Spanish-language media giant will get will become apparent during negotiations in the weeks and months ahead. Foundation sees link between dull ads and rise in Utah HIV rate

The Utah AIDS Foundation used to pass out beer coasters with pictures of condoms and messages such as "Thank you and come again." But its latest federally funded HIV-prevention messages have been blander. One ad now in weekly newspapers shows a haggard man in women's clothing smoking a cigarette, with the line "STDS are a total drag," and urges readers to get tested. Meanwhile, Utah's HIV-infection rate has been rising; it's up 32 percent so far this year in Salt Lake County compared with the same time last year.

Sexual Awareness for Everyone, or the SAFE, program has shown promise in curbing recurrent bouts of common sexually transmitted diseases among high-risk teenage girls, researchers report. They found that a group of 14- to 18-year-old Mexican-American and African-American girls who participated in the SAFE program were less apt to engage in risky sexual behavior and had a statistically lower incidence of recurrent gonorrhea and Chlamydia infection in the first 6 months and over time, compared with teenage girls in a control group.

Young adults experience news fatigue from being inundated by facts and updates, according to a study commissioned by The Associated Press. They are unable to give full attention to the news because they are often simultaneously engaged in other activities, such as reading e-mail.
